What a $160K Chartwell Kitchen Included: Planning a Luxury Kitchen in West Vancouver

Table of Contents

Most complete kitchens in West Vancouver are planned in a broad range of about $40,000 to $80,000 or more, and highly customized projects go beyond that. So what does a kitchen at the top of the market actually include? QUAY’s Chartwell project is a useful worked example: a luxury design-build kitchen with custom cabinetry, a curved navy island, stone countertops, integrated appliances and warm brass details. It came in at about $160,000 and took about one month on site.

This post walks through what that kitchen involved, why a high-end kitchen costs more than a standard one, and what to plan for on timing and permits. If you are earlier in the process, start with our overview of kitchen renovation in West Vancouver.

What the Chartwell kitchen included

The homeowners wanted a brighter, more functional kitchen that felt sophisticated without becoming overly formal, with substantial storage, better movement through the room and a strong central gathering space. QUAY designed and built the whole kitchen as one coordinated project rather than a set of separate trades. According to the Chartwell kitchen project page, the scope covered:

  • Kitchen design and space planning: layout, circulation, finishes and material coordination.
  • Custom cabinetry and millwork: custom painted cabinetry, tailored storage and curved island detailing.
  • A curved navy island: seating, storage and stone work surfaces in one piece of custom cabinetry.
  • Stone countertops: fabricated and installed around the curved island profile.
  • Tile backsplash: neutral tile across the cooking and preparation walls.
  • Plumbing and brass fixtures: sink, faucet and plumbing connections coordinated with the island design.
  • Electrical and lighting: task lighting, ambient lighting and appliance power requirements.
  • Integrated appliances: panel-ready refrigeration and coordinated appliance placement.
  • Flooring and finish coordination: flooring transitions, painting and final finish details.
  • Project management: trades, scheduling, installations and final quality control handled by one team.

Why a high-end kitchen costs more than a standard kitchen

A standard complete kitchen and a kitchen like Chartwell share the same basic trades. The difference is how much of the work is custom and how many pieces have to be designed to fit each other. Our kitchen renovation cost guide notes that larger, premium and highly customized kitchens can exceed $100,000. Chartwell shows where that extra investment goes:

  • Custom millwork instead of standard boxes. Painted cabinetry built to the room, tailored storage and a curved island all have to be designed, built and installed to the home’s own dimensions.
  • Stone that follows the design. At Chartwell, the stone countertops were fabricated and installed around the curved island profile.
  • Integrated appliances. Panel-ready refrigeration has to be planned with the cabinetry, and the electrical work has to meet each appliance’s power requirements.
  • Larger homes and larger kitchens. Chartwell homes often have generous room proportions and larger kitchen footprints. Custom cabinet dimensions, premium appliance packages, architectural lighting, expanded islands and material continuity with adjoining living spaces can all influence the design.
  • Coordination. Cabinetry, stone, plumbing, lighting and appliances depend on each other, so design, materials and construction need to be managed together.

How much does a luxury kitchen cost in West Vancouver?

There is no single number, because a luxury kitchen is defined by its scope. As a reference point, complete West Vancouver kitchens are planned at about $40,000 to $80,000 or more, larger, premium and highly customized kitchens can exceed $100,000, and the Chartwell kitchen, with its custom millwork, curved island, stone, integrated appliances and brass details, came in at about $160,000. Your own budget depends on the size of the kitchen, the cabinetry, the countertop and appliance specification, layout changes, and the plumbing and electrical work involved.

How long does a high-end kitchen take?

Many standard kitchens need about 15 working days on site once design, materials and cabinetry are ready. Structural or highly custom work takes longer. The Chartwell kitchen took about one month on site. In both cases the on-site time comes after the planning: the schedule is set before construction starts, once the scope and selections are decided.

Do you need a permit for a kitchen renovation in West Vancouver?

It depends on the scope. West Vancouver homes are permitted by the District of West Vancouver, not the City of Vancouver. A kitchen that moves walls, structure or the layout can need a building permit, and changes to plumbing, gas or electrical fall under trade permits. On the District’s trades permits page, mechanical permits cover plumbing, drainage and hot-water heating, and electrical permits must be taken out by a provincially qualified contractor unless you can show the electrical inspector you have the knowledge and skills to do the work yourself. A street occupancy permit is needed if a bin or truck has to use municipal property such as the boulevard, sidewalk or road.

Planning a high-end kitchen: where to start

  • Define the scope first. Decide whether the layout, structure, plumbing or electrical will change. That drives both the budget and the permits.
  • Settle the custom pieces early. Millwork, an island, stone and integrated appliances depend on each other, so design them together.
  • Have the design, materials and cabinetry ready before construction starts. That is what keeps the time on site short.
  • Use one accountable team. Chartwell’s design, material coordination and construction were managed by one team from layout to final quality control.
