Project story

A bigger room for a busy Mount Pleasant rehearsal studio

Soundhouse Studios runs rehearsal rooms for bands, musicians and performers on West 8th Avenue in Mount Pleasant. The studio wanted to turn two smaller spaces into one larger room, which meant taking out a soundproof partition wall between them.

QUAY demolished the soundproof wall and took the materials away for recycling and disposal. We relocated two light switches and a receptacle that were on the old wall, patched the drywall at the bulkhead and columns where the wall had been, and prepared every patched surface for paint. A final clean left the room ready for the studio's own painting and finishes.

It was a small, focused job: the wall came out on day one and the work was finished within about a week in March 2024.

The work

Where the wall came out

These photos were taken when our work was complete. The soundproof wall is gone and the two spaces now read as one long room. The patched drywall at the bulkhead and columns shows where the old wall met the ceiling and structure, sanded and prepared for the studio's paint.

Small commercial renovations, done properly

Not every commercial project is a full build-out. Removing a wall, relocating electrical or reworking a room for a new use still needs careful demolition, the right trades and clean finishing, especially in a business that has to keep running.

FAQ

Studio wall removal questions

Common questions from studio and small business owners planning to open up a space.

How much did this room expansion cost?

The work fell in the $5,000 to $10,000 range before GST. That covered demolition and disposal of the soundproof wall, relocating two switches and a receptacle, patching the bulkhead and columns, paint preparation and cleaning.

How long did it take?

About one week. The wall was removed on the first day, followed by the electrical relocation, drywall patching and cleaning.

Can any interior wall in a commercial space be removed?

Not always. This partition was non-structural. If a wall carries load or contains fire separations, plumbing or ventilation, removing it may need an engineer and a permit, so QUAY checks the wall before pricing the work.

What happens to the switches and outlets on a removed wall?

They are relocated to a remaining wall by an electrician, so the room still has lighting control and power where it is needed.

Does QUAY take on small commercial jobs?

Yes. QUAY handles small commercial renovations like this one as well as full tenant improvements, and plans the work around your business.
