Project story
A custom maple kitchen in Kitsilano, Vancouver
This Kitsilano house had a dark kitchen with cherry-stained cabinets, speckled granite and a raised peninsula. The homeowners wanted a lighter, more traditional kitchen with more storage, and a better connection to the dining area beside it.
We replaced the kitchen with custom natural maple shaker cabinets on plywood boxes with soft-close hardware, topped with white quartz. A new island holds an undermount double sink, a pull-down faucet and the dishwasher, with a built-in wine rack at the end facing the dining room.
The biggest change is the kitchen extension. We carried the cabinetry and quartz along the dining room wall in a long run of deep drawers, cupboards and open shelving, adding storage and a serving counter without moving any walls.
To finish the room, we built a custom solid maple dining table to match the cabinets and installed new patio doors out to the garden. The project was completed in 2021 and came in at about $70,000. See more of our kitchen renovations in Vancouver, or read about kitchen renovation in Kitsilano.

The neighbourhood
Kitchen renovations in Kitsilano
Kitsilano runs from English Bay south to around West 16th Avenue, between Burrard and Alma. Its streets mix early-1900s character houses with newer homes and low-rise apartments, and many of those older houses have kitchens that are dark, closed in or short on storage.
Character homes
Older Kitsilano houses often have separate kitchens and dining rooms. Extending cabinetry into the dining room, as we did here, joins them without moving walls. See our character home renovations in Kitsilano.
West 4th and Broadway
The shops, cafés and restaurants of West 4th Avenue and West Broadway are a short walk away.
Kits Beach
Kitsilano Beach, Kits Pool and the seawall sit at the neighbourhood's north end on English Bay.

FAQ
Custom kitchen questions
Common questions from Kitsilano and Vancouver homeowners planning a kitchen renovation.
How much does a custom kitchen renovation cost in Kitsilano?
This Kitsilano kitchen, including a custom kitchen extension along the dining wall and a matching maple dining table, came in at about $70,000. Complete Vancouver kitchens commonly fall within a $40,000–$80,000+ planning range, depending on size, finishes and layout changes.
What is a kitchen extension?
Here it means carrying the kitchen's cabinetry and countertop beyond the original kitchen, in this case a long run of drawers and open shelving along the dining room wall. It adds storage and serving space without moving walls.
Can you build a custom dining table to match new cabinets?
Yes. In this home we built a solid maple dining table to match the new maple cabinets, so the kitchen and dining area read as one space.
Do you renovate kitchens in older Kitsilano houses?
Yes. QUAY renovates kitchens in Kitsilano character homes and across Vancouver's west side, including Point Grey, Dunbar and Shaughnessy, planning the work around each home's layout and original details.
