Project story
A fully custom kitchen in Shaughnessy, Vancouver
The original kitchen had honey oak cabinets, a speckled countertop, an oak island and a built-in desk with wine-rack cabinets above it. The homeowners wanted a bright, fully custom kitchen in its place, plus a dry bar and a dining table designed to match.
We replaced the kitchen with fully custom white shaker cabinetry, including glass-front uppers by the window and a tall wall of storage for the ovens and microwave. Quartz with soft grey veining now runs across the counters, the backsplash and a large new island.
The island is the heart of the room. It holds a professional-style gas rangetop under a stainless island hood set into a new ceiling bulkhead, with deep drawers on one side and open shelving at the end for baskets and cookbooks.
Two extras made the project. The old desk niche became a dry bar, lined in the same quartz, with floating shelves, wine cubbies and a beverage fridge. Beside the kitchen, we built a custom waterfall dining table to match, finished with a new pendant light. The full project came in at $70,000–$80,000 and took 3 weeks on site. The neighbourhood
Kitchen renovations in Shaughnessy
Shaughnessy was laid out by the Canadian Pacific Railway beginning in 1909 and named after CPR president Sir Thomas Shaughnessy. More than a century later, it is still one of Vancouver's most established residential neighbourhoods, known for large lots, mature trees and generous family homes.
Established family homes
Large homes with kitchens that open to dining and family spaces, where storage, lighting and the island layout make the biggest difference.
Granville Street
Boutiques and some of the city's best restaurants line Granville Street along the neighbourhood's eastern edge.
Kerrisdale and Arbutus
Kerrisdale's village shops sit just to the south, with Arbutus to the west.
Schools nearby
Families here are close to Shaughnessy Elementary, Point Grey Secondary and several independent schools.
In homes like these, the kitchen usually connects to the dining and family spaces, so it pays to plan the whole area together, as we did here with the dry bar and the dining table. Planning your own? FAQ
Custom kitchen questions
Common questions from Shaughnessy and Vancouver homeowners planning a custom kitchen.
How much does a custom kitchen renovation cost in Shaughnessy?
This Shaughnessy project, a fully custom kitchen with a dry bar and a custom dining table, came in at $70,000–$80,000. Complete Vancouver kitchens commonly fall within a $40,000–$80,000+ planning range, and larger or highly customized kitchens can exceed $100,000.
How long does a custom kitchen renovation take?
This kitchen took 3 weeks on site. Most complete kitchens take about 15 working days once construction starts; custom millwork and added features like a dry bar or built-in table can add time.
Can a built-in desk be turned into a dry bar?
Often, yes. In this home, an old built-in desk with oak wine-rack cabinets became a dry bar with a quartz-lined back, floating shelves, wine cubbies and a beverage fridge, all within the existing niche.
Do you renovate kitchens in older Shaughnessy homes?
Yes. QUAY renovates kitchens in established Vancouver homes, including Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale, Dunbar and Kitsilano, planning the work around each home's layout and character.
